Blake Lively got herself in hot water earlier this week on Instagram. She posted a split photo of herself at the Cannes Film Festival – one photo of her face and the other of her from behind.

She captioned the photo with lyrics from Sir Mix-A-Lot’s song Baby Got Back .She wrote: “LA face with an Oakland booty”, which basically refers to a woman whose face looks like she is from Los Angeles, while her behind looks like she is from neighbouring Californian city Oakland, which has historically been a poorer area, with a high African-American population.

People were quick to slam Blake for being ‘racist’, but the man himself – Sir Mix-A-Lot – has jumped to her defence, saying the 1992 track was never meant to be about a specific race, but about different beauty standards needing to be acknowledged in the media.

He told the Hollywood Reporter: “That song was written with African-American women in mind, but believe me, there are white women with those curves everywhere, and they were once considered fat. And that’s what the song was about. It was not about some race battle.

“So I wrote this song not as a battle between the races. I wrote the song because I wanted cultivated, I wanted all these big magazines to kind of open up a little bit and say, ‘Wait a minute, this may not be the only beautiful.’ I mean, I do not look at Serena Williams as fat. I do not think she has an particle of fat anywhere on her. I did not want there to be one voice. I wanted to say, ‘Hey, us over here! What we feel like is this.'”
